Heavy-Duty Door Hinge: Thickness and Opening Guide

A heavy-duty door hinge should be selected from a controlled door and frame specification, not from the word “heavy-duty” alone. HIPAD’s supplied hinge reference lists heavy-duty leaf thickness at 4-6 mm with a 180-degree opening reference. The same catalog includes standard and industrial alternatives. Buyers need model-specific drawings, declared load and sample tests before approving an entrance-door hinge.
Check the actual heavy-duty model, pin and fixing pattern rather than the category label.
Heavy-duty, industrial and standard hinge comparison
The supplied HIPAD Hinges product reference gives the family ranges below. Thickness is a useful sorting field, but it is not a load rating. A thicker leaf on its own does not validate the pin, knuckle, screws, door substrate or installed alignment.

These descriptions belong to product families, not an approved bill of materials for every model. The source does not disclose one universal numeric door-mass rating or product certificate number for the hinges. Request exact dimensions and evidence for the quoted hinge.
What must the door schedule include?
Record leaf mass, width, height, material, opening direction, frame construction and the number and positions of hinges. Add the intended fixing substrate and fastener details. A heavy door with an offset center of gravity can put different demands on its hinges than a compact door of the same mass; the quote must identify the door geometry and installation configuration.
For replacement projects, measure the existing leaf recess, hole centers, knuckle projection and clearance at the frame. A hinge with the same broad thickness class may still change the door’s closed position or collide at the reveal.
A standard hinge is a separate family; compare its complete dimensions and duty evidence.
Opening angle requires an installation check
HIPAD lists a 180-degree opening reference for its standard stainless-steel and heavy-duty hinge families. That does not guarantee 180 degrees in every frame. The actual angle depends on hinge offset, projection, door thickness, casing, wall and stop location. Test a production-intent sample in a representative door and frame, including seals and adjacent hardware.
Do not use the hinge as a substitute for an opening stop. A separate door-control solution may be specified in the hardware schedule. The door closer guide explains why opening geometry must be checked across the assembly.
Material and finish: request the exact grade
The standard family is described as stainless steel in the supplied reference. For an industrial or heavy-duty model, ask for the actual leaf, pin and fastener materials rather than assuming a grade from appearance. State surface finish, sample color, exposure conditions and cleaning requirements. If corrosion performance matters, request model-specific evidence and a defined test basis.
EN 1935 is a European standard covering requirements and test methods for single-axis hinges. It is relevant background for discussing evidence, but the supplied HIPAD reference does not establish that any quoted model is certified to it. Request a valid model-specific report if the project requires conformity.
Specify the material and finish for each approved hinge component.
Six-step OEM approval process
Send the door and frame drawings with mass, dimensions, handing and desired swing.
Choose the standard, industrial or heavy-duty family as a starting point, then request the exact model drawing.
The supplied Hinges reference lists 4-6 mm for the heavy-duty family. Confirm the exact selected model and manufacturing tolerance.
Does a 6 mm leaf prove a higher numeric door capacity?
No. Capacity depends on the complete hinge, fixing, door geometry and installation. Ask for the selected model’s declaration and test evidence.
Can every heavy-duty hinge open to 180 degrees?
The family reference lists 180 degrees, but the installed opening depends on frame, reveal and stop geometry. Verify it on a representative assembly.
Are HIPAD hinges certified to EN 1935?
The supplied reference does not disclose a product certificate number or issuing body. Request a model-specific document if the project requires this standard.
Request a hinge specification
Send the door schedule, hinge locations, drawings and validation requirements through the HIPAD contact page. Ask for a model-specific quotation; the supplied reference does not establish a universal price or numeric load rating.
